Sierra MultiSport Camp -- CANCELLED --
Lakeshore Resort, Huntington Camp
August 1 - 3, 2008
Our summer camp combines a traditional, rustic Sierra camp experience with a Team Sheeper MultiSport format. We'll be based Lakeshore Resort, 70 miles northeast of Fresno on clear, alpine Lake Huntington at 7,000 feet. The camp is surrounded by three of the most popular recreational lakes of the Sierra: Edison, Florence and Shaver.
Our multisport camp includes open water lake swims, trail runs or hikes, road cycling and recovery stretching. This camp is a key progression opportunity for Season II events (late summer and fall triathlons, 24-hour Triathlon, and Death Valley Cycling Tour). If you want to combine training with a family outing, this is a great camp to bring your family. There are plenty of outdoor recreation activities right at Lakeshore, just reserve a family size cabin.
Lakeshore is a special place that lies in the heart of the Sierra between two vast National Parks, Yosemite to the north and Kings Canyon to the south. We'll be in an alpine zone above the broad, gently sloping ramp of the Sierra foothills and away from most intense summer heat. Here the tilted fault-blocks of the Sierra range reveal granite outcrops and the dense conifer forest gives way to fragile meadows. In this area the Sierra is not a single ridge but a complex of lofty crests that branch away from the main spine. One of these branching ranges, the Kaiser Range, rises 3000' just above Lake Huntington's north shore. One of the camp hikes will take us to base of Kaiser Peak (10,320'). On Mono Hot Springs - Lake Thomas Edison we will explore the headwaters of the south fork of San Joaquin River. The San Joaquin is one of 11 major Sierra river systems that carry snowpack runoff to the west. Further downstream the Mokelumne, Stanislaus, Tuolumne and Merced Rivers all empty their waters into the San Joaquin, which eventually converges with the Sacramento River to form the delta waters of the San Francisco Bay, 250 miles away. The roads above Mono Hot Springs are steep, narrow and rough – but they reward us with the deepest satisfaction of being close to the natural world.

Camp Plans
We are still working out the cycling routes and trail run/hike opportunities. One ride will go over Kaiser Pass (9175') and continue to Lake Thomas Edison and/or Florence Lake (40-50 miles). Another ride will be the loop around Huntington Lake that drops down to Shaver Lake (5370') covering about 40 miles. Another ride will go north on Stumps Springs. Hikes/runs will take us into the Sierra high country of the Kaiser Wilderness and the Dinky Lake Wilderness for the commanding views of much of the central Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The goal of the camp is to be active and alert in a fresh environment. There will be shorter options and turn around points so each athlete can find a balance of vitality and comfort.
Day 1: Kaiser Pass – Mono Hot Springs
We'll ride up and over Kaiser Pass (9175'), descend to the south fork of the San Joaquin and climb again to Lake Thomas Edison. After a 60 min run/walk along the lake shore we'll gather for lunch on the sunny deck at Vermillion Resort before reversing our ride back to Lakeshore. This is a high altitude day of acclimatization. The roads will be steep but very quiet, perfect for everyone finding their own pace and settling into the camp way of life. After some down time at Lakeshore, we'll test the lake temperature with a short swim, parallel to the shore, wetsuits optional.
Day 2: Triathlon Race Simulation
Even if you never plan do a triathlon, you'll get the chance to compress three sports into a 4 hour training effort in a patterned flow through a .5 mile swim loop, 10 mile bike out and back loop and 3 mile run course. We'll have a staff member out in the water and on the bike course to coach and support. Lakeshore resort will provide a hearty lunch. In the afternoon we're offering an optional hike to the Kaiser Ridge, there will be loop and turn around options. On Saturday night, Lakeshore serves their Prime Rib dinner (with other entrée and menu options). If you still have energy, go dancing in 'town' to Los Hooligans.
Day 3: Huntington to Shaver Lake
For our last camp day, we'll start with a morning swim before team breakfast, then cycle around Huntington Lake, dropping down to Shaver Lake (5370'), covering about 40 miles. Some riders may opt for additional miles on Stumps Springs. We'll close the camp with lunch to allow athletes to drive back to the Bay Area on Sunday afternoon.
