Menlo Park/Burgess Pool Contract
We will be moving!
Menlo Masters will be transitioning to another home base. This time the home base will be the brand new, not yet completed, 7 million dollar, 3 pool, aquatic facility at Burgess Park, in Menlo Park. We have a five year agreement.
The three pools are:
1. 25 yard x 25 meter, 11 lane, 7 foot deep competition pool that will be kept at 80 degrees.
2. 6 lane, 25 yard, 3.5-6 foot deep, instructional pool that will be kept at 85 degrees or warmer for lessons, rehabilitation and laps.
3. Baby pool with splashing water fountains and water falls, which will be kept at 85 degrees.
Our agreement with Menlo Park is that we operate the entire facility. We will be offering aquatic experiences for everyone in the entire community. The programs will include but are not limited to:
Lap swimming
Open Recreational Swimming
Year Round Youth Teams
Summer Swim Teams
Family Swim Sessions
Masters Swimming
Adult Triathlon Teams
Youth Triathlon Teams
Fitness/Boot Camps
Lessons
Water Polo
Scuba
This is undoubtedly going to be a tremendously large undertaking for our staff. I am committed to continue to offer the most valuable masters swimming experiences in the region and beyond.
I would like to thank all the team members who came to aid and support the proposal to the City Council. We won the somewhat controversial and much debated agreement by a 3-2 margin.
My best guess for the grand opening of the facility is May 1, 2006. Of course I will keep all posted on the developments as they occur.
We will be moving all of our teams and operations to Menlo Park. That means Herkner Pool will go vacant and we will relinquish our morning swim at Woodside High School.
I have high hopes that this transition will be manageable for all involved on our team. Every swimmer is valuable, so I hope to continue building the strength and resolve of Menlo Masters at our new home in Menlo Park.
February Challenge/Cans
We made it through another month of February. The increased volume and frequency of swimming will pay off in sustainable speed over a specified distance if one keeps the maintenance schedule consistent.
Congratulations to our top three swimmers to go over 100,000 yards and our only three to go over 100,000 yards:
1. John Sulzbach 111,400
2. Peter Shepherd 101,500
3. Scott Marshall 100,800

There are at least two reasons to spend the extra time swimming in February.
1. To build a solid aerobic foundation for the remainder of the year.
2. To donate 1 can of food to the working poor in our community for every 2000 yards swum. Please drop off your cans at Herkner or put them by my truck at Woodside High School. I will be delivering the cans to the St. Francis Center next Friday March 10, 2006.
Meeting for Swim Meet Volunteers
Our Swim Meet on Saturday April 22, 2006 at Sacred Heart has two lovely meet directors, Rebecca Pinto and Judy Strauss.
Rebecca and Judy are getting together with the volunteers and the chairpersons this Sunday morning after workout at Franklin Street Café in the Sequoia Station next to Safeway on Jefferson Ave.
The meeting is to state chair objectives, assign timelines, and to generally touch base.
Remember we now have a Sunday morning workout at 7:00AM.
