Kona Camp

For those of you looking to get some time away from the cold, sometimes wet weather in the Bay area during winter, 2012 will offer the opportunity to spend a week in the warmth of Big Island sun, spending 4 days riding around the island. The cycling tour will run from April 2 - 5, 2012.

The team has blocked rooms until Sept 15 at a number of overnight locations, so if you are planning to do this, don't plan on waiting until the last minute to sign up. Full details can be found on the website at http://www.teamsheeper.com/events/hawaii_big_island_bike_tour.php

As a bonus with regard to the timing of this tour, the Lavaman Triathlon is being held on April 1. This is an olympic distance race and is a very well run and lots of fun race. Ask Keith about it if you have any questions.

The team will also still be planning to go to Big Island in early June for the Hawaii 70.3 race, always a memorable experience.

Dusty and Crusty Update

The first Dusty and Crusty is coming up on Sunday, Sept 4th. It will start at 7.00am from Woodside Elementary. The course will be up through Huddart park, taking Dean's to Chinquapin, along Skyline Ridge Trail, then onto a 9 mile loop through the Purissima Trails and then back down Crystal Springs Trail in Huddart to Woodside Elementary. Allow 4-6 hours minimum to complete run. Participants must be mostly self-sufficient. There will be one sag stop on Skyline Rd at junction, and we need a volunteer for this duty. Please drop me an email if you would like to help out.

Some may choose to be just Dusty without becoming Crusty on the full distance. In this case, you would go to the top of Huddart, and then descend via Crystal Springs trail. Walking/hiking is also encouraged, one does not necessarily need to run the entire course. Pre-run check-in necessary on the day. Friday before the event is the deadline to RSVP to me (mike@teamsheeper.com) so we can manage a timeline, and have an idea of how many people will be participating. Maps will be provided. Partnerships are encouraged.

Mandatory: Personal hydration system while running, ability to carry 500 calorie minimum.

Santa Cruz Triathlon

Santa Cruz Triathlon (http://www.santacruztriathlon.org/SCT/) is coming up on Sept 25th. This is our last team race of the season, and it would be great to get a good team turnout. There will be an open water swim practice session in Santa Cruz in the weeks before the race.

If you are interested, don’t forget to sign up. We need a minimum number of athletes to ensure these rides go ahead.

Yoga at Team Sheeper

Lindsay Hiken will be teaching a weekly yoga class starting on Thursday, Sept 5th at 6.00pm in the Carriage House in Holbrook Palmer. This is her sales pitch:

The yoga for triathletes class will address a key element essential for peak performance as well as prolonged participation in endurance sports: injury prevention. Building strength in various stabilizer and core muscles will lead to improved cycling and running form, ultimately improving over-all performance. This type of strength training will also help prevent injuries common to endurance athletes such as rolled ankles.

Triathletes often experience tightness in the major muscle groups used in swimming, cycling, and running: calves, hamstrings, quadriceps, glutes, hips, shoulders, and neck. These muscles are in particular need of regular stretching to avoid the pulling, tearing, straining, and tendonitis common to endurance athletes. The yoga for triathletes class will address this muscle tightness in a way which doesn't require any prior experience with yoga, and will not cause over-stretching of the muscles.

In short, the yoga for triathletes class will provide improved performance and injury prevention through a combination of strength training and stretching in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Give it a try, I am sure it will be fun.
