Inspirations

Where do you draw inspiration from?  The following is some information and video footage that may help you through your day and assist in perspective.  Please use the information to expand your thoughts and your beliefs in what you can personally do.

MICHAEL SECREST, AGE 53, ATTEMPTS 24-HOUR WORLD RECORD
My good friend Michael "Bulldog" Secrest, one of the greatest superheroes of ultracycling, will attempt to break the 24-Hour Indoor World Cycling Record this Sunday-Monday. Beginning at 8am on Sunday, Secrest will circle
the amazing indoor velodrome at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA for 24 hours, attempting to better the 530.41 mile mark set by Rod Evans in Australia in 1994.

Secrest actually bettered Evans' mark at the outdoor Dominguez Hills, CA velodrome almost exactly 10 years ago when he rode 532.74 miles in 1996. However, one record is indoor and the other outdoor, so they are recorded and recognized in different categories.

Back in 1984, Secrest rode 516.2 miles at the indoor velodrome in Montreal, using a traditional (no aero bars or wheels) bike. He also set the 24-hour road mark of 545 miles in Iowa in 1996. Perhaps his most outrageous, purely zen-based 24-hour effort was in 1990, when he drafted an 18-wheeler around the Phoenix Motor Speedway for 1216.81 miles over 24 hours (a 51-mile an hour average!). Secrest also won the Race Across America in 1987 and set the still unbroken transcontinental record of seven days, 23 hours, 16 minutes in 1990.

Secrest, though 53 years old now, says he's not a lick slower now than ten or twenty years ago. You are encouraged to stop in to watch and to support his effort. If all goes well, he'll notch another record at 8am on Monday,October 23. On hand as head judge for the duration will be John Marino, the godfather of ultramarathon cycling and founder of the Race Across America and Furnace Creek 508!

Tuesday Night Runs

Our Tuesday night training runs alternate between the Westside loop and then ending up at Menlo College track, and the Eastside loop ending up at Menlo-Atherton High School track.  Each evening we attempt to run between 8-11miles at a strong tempo with race pacing on the tracks.

Greg Johnson has been kind enough to put together the maps that include turns and mileage.

Running Races Approaching

We are in the heart of the fall run season in Northern California.  It is a very busy season for all types of running from cross country races to the marathon.

The athletes that are trying to improve speed and have an affinity for short and fast races should take a look at the following races:
1. Cross Country race in Mountain View's Shoreline Park this Saturday.
2. Silicon Valley 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning
3. Run to the Wild Side 10K in S.F. the Sunday following Thanksgiving
4. Cross Country Championships in Golden Gate Park
5. X-Mas 4 person relays around Lake Merced-12/17

Those who have committed to attempt to qualify for the Boston Marathon next April should have their sights set on the long distance races:
1. Silicon Valley Half Marathon 10/29
2. Clarksburg 30K-11/12
3. Cal International Marathon-12/3

San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo was a team meeting point this past Saturday.

The cancellation of the Santa Barbara ride left many riders disappointed and still desiring a nice long riding weekend.  So they set off on Friday and rode to Big Sur, spent the night and then rode on to San Luis arriving on Saturday afternoon.  A group of about eight riders stayed together and enjoyed the scenery and the camaraderie.  Those riders were:
Lorraine Sneed
Marianne Brems
Kim Freitas
Elspeth Farmer
Kevin Burns
Martin Michael
Derrick Hansen
Tina Lount-Pretre

A few others decided to do the trip to San Luis in 1 day.  A 220 mile land rush, via a little known and seldom used strip of road through the center of California known as highway 25.  A road that was devoid of any services, cars, signs of life for nearly 100 miles.  A lunch stop consisted of a bio-break and whatever was remaining in a jersey pocket.

I think I have found the road for Pierre Pujol to ride on in preparation for his 2007 Ironman campaign.

Jason Campbell, a uber-elite, super strong, 45 year old national age group contender along with Paul "Stormin" Gorman, a guy whose motto is "nothing is a problem, I can do anything or solve anything."  These two guys were my running mates on our blast to SLO town.  Armed with a map from 1988, a jersey full of gels, and 1 light between 3 guys we took off in darkness heading south.  We arrived in San Luis in time to eat dinner with the other 8 riders.  We had a bit of "shut-eye" and woke up in time to enter a half-marathon run that started in town and ended in beautiful Avila Beach.  With respectable run times in our pocket the three of us enjoyed a hot catered breakfast at the finish line overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific.  We were all home in Menlo Park for lunch on Sunday.  We will welcome more company on our next impromptu adventures in 2008.

Killer Quad

That's right; Killer Quad starts in less than two weeks.  We kick off with the hour swim on Halloween, 50x100's the day after Thanksgiving, and 75x100's the day before Christmas, and 100x100's on New Years Eve morning.  Great awards as always.  Find your goggles and dust off the suit.
