Boston Marathon

We had a long build up for this race.  It started way back in October of 2006 with the San Jose Rock and Roll half marathon, and continued through the Clarksburg 30K, Cal International marathon, San Francisco half marathon and then finally Boston, the superbowl of all marathons.  The training and racing were a way for many of our team mates to keep a fitness focus through the triathlon off season and holiday season.

15 people from our team qualified for Boston, while 8 completed the race.  Race weekend and race day were highlighted by what is called a Nor'easter, or a storm with wind gusts out of the Northeast.

The weather on race day was not nearly as torturous as predicted and did not prevent our runners from their solid performances.

Mike Fero-3:11 ran a fantastic race off of some minimalist stealth training
Tracy Fujieda-3:57 a steady and strong race as always
Lennard Hachmann-2:59 our fastest finisher and an impressive even split effort.
Greg Johnson-3:23 his second marathon in 3 months and about equal to his first.
Kirsten Kempe-3:39 ran just hard enough to beat Osmond by 2 seconds to taunt him.
Mike Osmond-3:39 ran very well, even though he claims he stopped several times to wait for his running mates.
Mike Perkins-3:53 also running his second ever marathon in a span of a few months and finished while battling a foot injury.
Tim Sheeper-5:19 personal as well as team record run, where a new appreciation for all types of runners was learned.

Congratulations to all on qualifying and to those who completed the oldest and best marathon in the world.

Wildflower

Wildflower lived up to its reputation of having a challenging course, tough competition and hot, sweltering weather.  These seem to be ingredients that triathletes are secretly drawn to because nearly 7000 participants took part in the weekend extravaganza.

Thanks to the efforts of Sally Phillips and Cindy Welton we had a fantastic campsite overlooking the beautiful lake at the "quiet" side of all the campgrounds.  The potluck dinners on Friday and Saturday evening were well attended and not a single person left unfulfilled.

The long course was contested on Saturday under clear, warm and windy conditions.  The overall race winner's time this year was 15 minutes slower than last years times, if that is any indication to the effect of the winds.

Of course, triathletes are not ones to complain so we just cut our way through the winds and enjoyed comparing our fitness and race strategy against those around us.  Team members who crossed the finish line were:
Beth Boersman  6:54
Kelly Couch 4:59
Kathryn Cronje 5:22
Joan Ellison 5:29
Tracy Fujieda 6:32
Doug Fujii 6:24
Emmit Hancock 7:17
Vinod Herur 6:50
Peter Mendes 4:41
Sally Phillips 6:54
Joel Phillips  6:24
Jorge Pont  5:47
Dave Quincy  5:53
Tanja Sattler 6:26
Lorraine Sneed 6:20
Tim Sheeper 4:43

The Olympic course was raced on Sunday when the winds were completely gone and the sun was allowed to beat down on the athletes to make sure they were completely baked on the exposed run course.

We had outstanding efforts from with some very high age group placements:
Peter Buhl  2:28
Paul Carrick 3:23
Kent Couling 2:45
Allison Freeman  2:53
Lennard Hachmann  2:24
Kris Kruse-Elliot  3:05
Michael Leon  3:07
Keith Wilson  2:31

I am certain that Wildflower will be on the team racing schedule again next year.  It is just one of those things that a triathlete does to officially kick off the race season.

Triathlon 101

Triathlon 101 is now on the race calendar for June 10, 2007.  This first time race is held in Clearlake California and we will consist of a 2 mile swim and 80 mile bike and an 18mile run.

There are half-ironmans, full ironmans and now this is the three-quarter ironman.  It is out there for us, might as well give it a try.

Uvas Sprint Triathlon

Uvas is next Sunday.  The race is still open for registration.  There is even enough water in the reservoir to have the swim, the course is just going to be different from what it normally has been.

I am sure it will prove to be a short, intense and exciting event as always.

Wine Country Tour Registration Deadline

The third annual Wine Country Tour is set to go off this Memorial Day weekend from Sebastopol.  This 3-day ride has daily distances ranging from 50-100+ miles.  Rural country roads are the mainstay of the tour as are warm temperatures and extremely beautiful vistas.

The deadline to register is this weekend.  We are a few riders short of our minimum capacity, so sign up now if you would like the tour to happen.

Wetsuits

I am stocking wetsuits in the pro shop again this year.  The wetsuits are made by a company called Fit 2 Race, and they are fast suits at a fraction of the price that the other wetsuit company's are charging.

I am selling these suits for $300 and the suit is comparable to other brand models that are charging $400-$600.

The designer and owner of the company is an old-time racing buddy of mine; therefore our team is able to reap the heavy discounted price.

Come in and check out the Fit 2 Race Sockeye.  www.fit2race.com

37 for Mandlekern

Our resident State Trotter has completed his 37th triathlon in his 37th state.  His latest adventure brought him to Arkansas where he completed a sprint triathlon.  He is on a plane today on his way to Utah to bag his 38th state.

He is amazing and driven.  All the best to Dave who plans to complete his odyssey next summer in at the New York Triathlon.  Who is interested in being there to support Dave?

Summer Training Focus

The summer race season has begun in earnest.  Athletes on our team will be racing nearly every weekend in either a triathlon, swim event or a running race.

In an effort to make everyone aware of the daily/weekly training flow so that you can alter and adapt and adjust your participation and expectations in weekly workouts the following will hold true for most of the remainder of the spring and summer.

Monday
Strong indoor spin or recovery level road ride

Tuesday
am-strong spin/run combo with a speed emphasis
pm-strong run alternating between track for leg speed and trails for strength

Wednesday
am-strong bike alternating between hill sessions and flat time trial sessions
pm-strong bike alternating between chase groups and flat and hill power work

Thursday
am-strong run alternating between track for leg speed and trails for strength
pm-strong spin/run combo for race intensity simulation

Friday
Recovery day-little to no leg work

Saturday
am-swim at threshold with distance freestyle
am-strong bike using base maintenance long rides with hills, time trial speed sessions and threshold efforts followed by runs.

Sunday
am-endurance oriented runs on trails and mountains

If you are preparing for Olympic style and distance racing make certain to hit the Tuesday/Thursday combo workouts as they will become the backbone for your racing intensity simulations.

The Saturday workouts will continue to be the longest and most difficult efforts of the week, so be sure you are rested for those workouts.
