Epic Ride

It is here!  There are 3 start times tomorrow morning.  6:45AM, 7:30AM, and 8:15AM.  Please place yourself where you will be riding with people your own ability.  Fastest riders leave last.  It works out best for all involved that way.

Mike Robles will be the SAG driver.   Leave food or clothing by the back gate of Herkner in the morning and it will get into the SAG vehicle.  The SAG will leave Herkner about 8:30AM, and it will follow the course into Felton for the lunch stop at New Leaf Market on Highway 9 in Felton.  The SAG should be there by 11:00AM.  Make lunch stops less than 30 minutes to give yourself ample time to do the second half and harder half of the ride.

Allow 7-9 hours for the 110 miles and 10,000 Feet of climbing.  Bring 2 tubes, a patch kit, a pump on your bike (better than C02), allen wrenches, 2 large drink bottles, rain jacket, money, ID, cell phone.  Plan on consuming 300 calories for every hour you are on the bike.  Attempt to drink 16 ounces of fluid each hour of riding.

Be prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings our way tomorrow.  It could rain, it could be cold, or it could be windy or hot.  It just does not matter as long as you are prepared and mentally ready.

The course is simple.  Very few have gotten lost.  The overview is this: Up Old LaHonda, Down 84, Left on Pescadero Road, Haskins Hill, Left Pescadero High School onto Cloverdale Road, which will turn into Gazos Creek and bring you out at Highway 1,  Highway 1 past Davenport, Left at Bonny Doon, Right on Ice Cream Grade, Descend into Felton, (Lunch), Climb East Zayante, Left on Summit, Right on Bear Creek (Skyline Blvd.)  Skyline Boulevard to 84, Descend 84 back to Herkner.  Maps may be available.  How Epic is it with a map?

I would like everyone to exercise caution descending 84 into the town of La Honda.  The road has been torn up from the rain and weather and can become quite dangerous at speeds over 30 MPH.

Iron Training Camp

It appears that this years Iron Training Camp in Carmel Valley will have close to 40 campers this year.

Detailed information about the camp and a rooming list will be distributed Monday March 27.

If you are registered for the camp, make certain that you go into the camp mentally and physically rested and sharp.  We will not have an arts and crafts section nor will we be singing around a campfire.  We are there to focus our efforts and to overload our systems.

There will be good rooms, good food, good courses, and good company.

Ironman California 70.3 - Oceanside

It was empowering and inspiring for me to watch all the Team Sheeper athletes compete at the half-Ironman last Saturday in Oceanside.

March is awfully early in the season to be in race form, since the triathlon season in California now stretches for 8 months through to November.

Off predominantly base and strength training our team performed admirably, while some posted lifetime bests at the distance.

We had two athletes, Jeff Piland and Kelly Couch perform extremely well in there first elite race.  We had a few moms, Mimi Winsberg and Tina Lount also putting in top performances after giving birth within the last 8 months.  We also had numerous athletes in the top ten in their age group or within minutes of the top ten positions.  Our teams depth and quality improvement over the past few years has been astounding.  Just completing the race does not seem to be satisfactory anymore.  Competing in the race has replaced completing.

Thanks for a good show:

Ironman Coeur d'Alene Meeting

A very common statement from athletes over the past several weeks has been,  "What do I need to do in training, I feel like I am behind?"

If more than a handful of people have voiced this to me, then even more are feeling this.  That means it is time to meet and find out if indeed it is true.

There will be an Ironman meeting, and a triathlon team general meeting this Sunday after the morning run.  At this meeting we will discuss the next phase of training that we are about to embark upon.

We will do this meeting over breakfast at about 10:45AM in Portola Valley at the Portola Valley Bakery, 884 Portola Valley Road.

Find out how we plan to get everyone ready for the many different events coming this season.

Wife Swapping

This is a message that I received the other day asking if we had any takers for a television reality show.  Well, do we?

Greetings Team Sheeper!

My name is Daniel Markell and I am the Casting Producer for the hit show Wife Swap on ABC!

Perhaps you have seen it. We are currently looking for amazing MOM's who love competition and physical training that could whip another family into shape! I Ideally, We are looking for an amazing family (married with kids over the age of 6) where the parents train or compete in bi/triathlons with the kids.

After checking out your website I was wondering if there was anyone who you know of who might be gung ho for the experience of a lifetime!

Also, not that money is an incentive, but there is a $20,000 honorarium offered to the family that is selected.

Any additional exposure you could bring to this project would be greatly appreciated!

Please feel free to contact me with any thoughts or questions you may have.

Best regards,

Daniel Markell
