Grinder #2 - Diablo

It was an epic day and a spectacular ride up to the summit of Mount Diablo.
The course coupled with the extremely hot temperatures, figuratively
brought some of our riders to their knees.  But, all who embarked on the
journey, battled and returned victorious.

Leaving from a beautifully green park in Dublin, with a pleasant 45 minutes
of even paced touring over flat roads, before the group began the arduous
hour long ascent to the peak.  After the near hour long descent into Walnut
Creek, a surprise was waiting for the riders in the name of Morgan
Territory.  Morgan Territory lies in the East side shadow of Diablo and
offers a whopper of a climb that took most riders about 45 minutes in the
triple digit temperatures.

Grinder #2 was definitely more challenging than Grinder #1, while Grinder
#3 remains mysterious.

24 Hours of Triathlon Results

The 24 Hours of Triathlon, held at Cherry Creek State Park near Denver
Colorado turned out to be a true gem of a race.  The new concept of racing
a triathlon for 24 hours nonstop may really gain traction some time soon.
The logistics of continuous exercise breeds team camaraderie and elevated
outputs from each team member, which ultimately leads to positive memories
of the event.

Each triathlon completed added up to 1/10th of a full Ironman.  Here are
the places and here are the number of full triathlons completed per
individual or team.

Vegas Registration

The USAT Club Championships are being held at Lake Mead, just outside of
Las Vegas on Saturday October 18, 2008.  We currently have 19 athletes
registered to make the trip.

Here is some information from the race director:

The Pumpkinman Triathlon is well on it's way to being HUGE once again!
As of now we have approximately 1,000 athletes registered, surpassing our
2006 Club Nationals race! (Which again makes the Pumpkinman the largest
USAT Club Nationals to date!)

Just a few notes, on the upcoming race.

We have capped the Sprint and Intermediate distance races at 750 athletes
combined, as of today there are 657. Less than one hundred more spots and
we close this down. To secure your spot, please register today!

We have also capped the Halfmax Championship at 750 athletes.
There are a FEW General Entries left to secure your spot in that race as
well. Please visit www.ultramaxtristore.com to register.

For those of you that have raced the Pumpkinman in the past, you'll be in
for a treat with the new all asphalt out and back run course! Please visit
the Pumpkinman page to view the maps or to read your athlete information
packet.

If you've never competed in a Club Nationals race, there is NO energy
like it!

Building Futures Now News

Building Futures Now is our Menlo Masters/Team Sheeper founded and
sponsored non-profit. Here is some news on what we are doing. Also see
www.buildingfuturesnow.org

. Our 14 BFN kids have just started 4th grade in 9 different schools in
East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park. They had a lot of fun and gained a lot
of confidence both academically and socially attending our program's
rigorous five week summer school.
. Thank you to these Menlo Masters for generously volunteering on summer
field trips: Greg Gaffney, Martin Michael, John Goldman, Marianne Brems,
Kim Freitas and Ann Burton.  Thank you to the amazing reading buddies who
provided daily 1-1 reading time throughout the summer: Aaron Katzman, Lee
Katzman, Virginia Justus, Kathleen Liston, Mike Fero, Vivian Johsens, Kelly
Couch, Sue McGlennon, Rhiley Keegan, Megan Conn, Michele Santilhano, Laurie
Ausserer and Steve Choy. We also want to recognize the generous donation of
Tracy Fujieda and Jason Golbus on the occasion of their wedding. They
requested that guests contribute to BFN in Lieu of gifts (via
idofoundation.org, Whitney Wood and Kathleen Liston helped designe the
website which Virginia Justus and Lorraine Sneed built. Sig Paulazzo, Tanya
Sattler, Lennard Hachmann, and Marianne Brems wielded power tools and paint
brushes to convert the garage into the Blue School. Donia Bijan developed
recipes for our children's breakfasts and planted a garden for lunch
veggies. What an incredible team!
. Diana Spieker & Krista Skehan shared their gorgeous, new book Alphebetica
with our children, talked about how they wrote and illustrated it and gave
each child their very own signed copy. None of our young people had ever
met an author or illustrator before or owned a signed book. For more about
their work see www.personifypress.us
. Nine Menlo Masters have agreed to be Mentors for the upcoming school
year. We are still looking for 5 volunteer mentors to pair up with 5
children. Community-based mentoring involves three meetings per month over
a one year commitment. Mentors spend time with their child talking, playing
and going on outings.  Mentoring can provide a child with a strong,
positive connection with a grownup which has proven educational, social and
emotional benefits.  BFN's Mentor Kickoff will be September 20th where
mentors and families will be introduced.
. We need chaperones for our once a month school year field trips coming
up.
September 23: Kate DiCamillo Author talk (Because of Win Dixie, The Tales
of Despereaux) at Keplers with  Ice Cream 10-2 pm and October 4: Mountain
Biking at Tennessee Valley in Marin 8:30-4pm. A very cool organization,
tripsforkids.org provides kid's bikes and guides. This will be a terrific
day on the open trails of Marin Headlands (we welcome Triathletes!). Please
email Laurel Wessler, lwessler@buildingfuturesnow.org.
. Finally, drop us a note if we forgot to acknowledge your help and
contribution. This is an enormous team undertaking, we are uplifted by each
person's time and effort

Wakeboarding with Eduardo

Eduardo Llach as many of you experienced at Wildflower this year is an avid
waterskiier and wakeboarder and has extended an invitation to Team Sheeper
members:

I wanted to invite Team Sheepers to come wakeboarding on Sept 14th.

I can hold about 12 on the boat, and we can also do a picnic and rotate
people through...

We can meet @ 8:30 @ lake Anderson (Cochran Road from 101 South, near
Morgan Hill).

I can take the first 10 people and have a few 'on the waiting list' if
there is a demand then we can do it again on the next Sunday...

I can teach people how to wakeboard,  have video and all the needed
equipment.  I can also pull people waterskiing.

Let me know if you would like to join me.

Eduardo F. Llach
