Athlete of the Month
The Team Sheeper Athlete of the Month award is handed out to a member of the team on a monthly basis, 7 or 8 times a year. The AOM is someone who made a notable contribution to the team or did something remarkable. Selection is made by nomination and voting by the membership.
You can nominate anyone and the nomination period is usually during the first week or two of the month. Look for notification that nominations are being sought. When nomination close, the voting starts and once all the votes are tallied, the new AOM is crowned.
Besides bragging rights for a month, our AOM gets some goodies from our gracious sponsors, such as free shoes from TRH, a massage from SMI, gift certificates from GoRide.
SMI is proud to sponsor this month's athlete who embodies the spirit of Team Sheeper. SMI is a non-profit public benefit corporation dedicated to the prevention and treatment of overuse injuries, optimization of human function and enhancement of athletic performance.
David Greenwood
March 2006 Athlete of the Month
We are congratulating David Greenwood on being our March 2006 Athlete of the Month. We caught up with David as he was working vigorously on his golf combo to ask him a few questions... We wish him much luck in his preparations for IM CDA!
Are you currently employed and/or describe your employment/career?
Career number one: two decades on Wall St. Career number two: biotech. EVP, CFO of Geron in MenloPark.
Do you have any specific career aspirations? Such as becoming a pro
Triathlete at age 54???
Do you have a spouse or children to tell us about?
Wife, Margaret, loves triathlon because it gets me out of the house on long bike rides: she runs a home health care business. Two kids, both far better athletes than me: Megan was an international elite gymnast on team USA - now a bio-chemist. Justin was a collegiate swimmer - now a sixth grade teacher.
What other hobbies do you have?
Joking, right? Actually, I very much enjoy cycling around Lake Tahoe and three-hour go-slow trail runs on the PCT above Squaw Valley on summer weekends.
How did you become involved with Team Sheeper?
Referred by Rusty and Kristen Day, who are not known by anyone on the team today, but Kristen was once a masters swimmer and Tim taught their kids to swim when he was just starting out.
What is your athletic background?
Old school: football, basketball, baseball. That's why I swim in the warm-up lanes. Most interesting event: raced RAAM on a relay team in 1992: we managed a second place finish.
What is it you like most about triathlons?
Two things: Every day training, and training hard now and then. Secondly, our teammates who are all healthy, upbeat, and very nice people.
What races are you planning for the remainder of this year, or the future, that you are gearing up for?
CDA! After that, whatever.
What are your Triathlon, or personal goals / aspirations?
I do this for the fun, the fitness and the camaraderie.
What is your favorite Team Sheeper workout or memorable moment?
Epic rides, Ultimate/Bay-to-Breakers runs, IM camps, Wine Country tours, etc.
Is there anything else we should know about you?
Perhaps, but a bit of discretion is probably in order!
